Every invoice has a sender entity (“bill from”) and a recipient entity (“bill to”). Lemma checks your access separately for each side.

Billing from an entity

To send an invoice from an entity, you need the Accounting banking permission or higher on that entity. Owners and accounting-role members can bill from an entity; read-only members cannot.

Billing to an entity

You can bill to:
  1. Any entity you have access to, including entities where you only have read-only access.
  2. Any entity in your organization, if this is configured with Lemma’s team — even entities you have no access to at all.

Entities you have access to

If you’re a member of the recipient entity — at any role, including read-only — you can send it an invoice. The recipient’s own owner decides whether to pay it, so this works even if you personally have no ability to move money on that entity.

Entities in your organization

MSO-PC structures often need one entity to bill another — for example, a practice paying a management fee to its MSO — without either side seeing the other’s accounts. Contact us and we’ll group your entities into an organization on Lemma’s end. Once configured, entities in the same organization can send invoices back and forth without either side granting the other any account access. See MSO-PC compliance for how Lemma supports this ownership structure more broadly.

Self-approvals

If you’re an owner of both the sending and receiving entity, you can send an invoice and then approve its own payment. We allow this because plenty of owners run multiple entities and are the only person with access to one side of the relationship — there’s no one else around to approve the payment. Invoicing still gives you a clean paper trail of line items and amounts for why the money moved, even when the same person is on both ends of the transaction.
