# Patient refunds

> Mail a refund check to a patient, with an optional printed document enclosed.

When a patient is owed a refund, you can mail them a physical check directly from Lemma. You can also include a PDF document, such as an explanation of benefits or itemized statement, that will be printed and enclosed with the check.

## Sending a refund

Go to [Move money > Mail a check](https://app.getlemma.com/_/move-money/mail-a-check) and complete the following steps:

    Provide the patient's full mailing address. This is where the check will be
    delivered.

  <Step title="Enter the refund amount">
    Enter the amount to refund the patient.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Choose a shipping method">
    | Method               | Speed             | Delivers to PO boxes |
    | -------------------- | ----------------- | -------------------- |
    | **USPS First Class** | 5-7 business days | Yes                  |
    | **FedEx Overnight**  | Next business day | No                   |

    FedEx Overnight checks submitted before 2 PM ET are printed and mailed the
    same day, so they can be delivered by the next morning. USPS First Class
    checks are printed by the end of the next business day.

    USPS delivers to any address in the United States, including PO boxes. FedEx
    Overnight requires a street address and cannot deliver to PO boxes.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Upload an attachment (optional)">
    You can upload a PDF to include with the check. The document will be printed
    in black and white and mailed in the same envelope.

    Requirements:

    * **Format:** PDF
    * **Page size:** US Letter (8.5" × 11") on every page
    * **Page limit:** up to 5 pages

    Skip this step if you do not need to include a document.

    Review the details and confirm. The fee is deducted from your account
    automatically.
